Kilim Rugs

Last spring and summer I worked on an interior design project for Fairmont Private Schools in Orange County. The project was to restore the library of their high school campus. The campus is located on the historic Stanton Estate in Anaheim and is very beautiful, 1920's Spanish Colonial Revival style architecture. As we were working through the remodel and choosing furnishings I fell in love with kilim. I had my eyes on the patchwork kilim rug at the top left ,but it was double my budget so I ended up with a soumak (pictured top right). A Sundance catalog came in today's mail and I noticed a similar rug and thought I'd do a little kilim posting. I still need to take photos of the completed library project--the top right photo was taken the evening of the furniture installation back in August...you can see a kilim pillow (no longer available) that I scored at a Pottery Barn outlet within the photo.

We wanted to get a kilim rug or pillow while we were in Turkey last year. Unfortunately they were excessively expensive and would not fit in our backpacks. =( We did chat with one of the local rug shop for about an hour, where he told us all about the history, technique and regional differences in kilim.

I have, however, found incredible deals at a couple local outlets (including sundance). Tempted by the Pottery Barn kilim stool or bench (for 60% off!) but can't figure out where it would go yet, so it remains at the store.

How was your trip to Turkey? Was the best part the rug man, because that sounds awesome! We were at a rug bazaar in Morocco one time and it was a very memorable experience...as in CRAZY with people trying to get us to buy hundreds of rugs...

Turkey was a m a z i n g. I highly suggest you go there. This particular rug man wasn't pushy at all. In fact, we told him we couldn't afford a rug right off the bat, but were interested in learning about them. So over hot apple tea, he showed us dozens of incredible rugs. If you're ever in Istanbul, stop by Osman's Carpet Shop by the Grand Bazaar. You won't be disappointed. Rick Steves wrote about him here: http://tinyurl.com/yexluyu

I DO have a place for a kilim bench, and have been dreaming about it. When I close my eyes, it sits in my living room :)
